5 minutes and 5 months

Posted by hammerscale on December 8, 2011

In my continuing quest for a cleaner shop, I often rely upon the “5 and 5” rule, which goes as follows: Pick up an errant item (e.g, stock, tool, tooling), then ask myself, “will I use this in the next five minutes?” If yes, it stays where it is, if no, I ask “will I use this in the next 5 months?” If yes, I put in where it goes, or find a place for it to go. If no, it’s either trash, or it belongs in long term storage, (for me, that means under the crawl space in the house.)

More Safety

3rd safety rule:

Always remember NOT to split your head open when crawling, kneeling under machine tools. Banging your head on a chunk of cast iron ain’t fun.
