Carriage Lock

Posted by hammerscale on September 23, 2012

My Rockwell lathe comes from the factory with just a Allen head machine screw acting as the carriage lock.  What I’ve been using is a hex wrench sitting in the screw, which works pretty good, but falls short aesthetically and ergonomically.

So I finally got around to updating the arrangement by replacing the screw with a custom made shoulder bolt and lever.

Cross drilled and threaded to accept a 3/8’s ” rod. The screw is made of 41L40 alloy, which threads beautifully and is very wear resistant.

After soaking in Caswell’s black oxide solution for two minutes.  I’ve got a good assortment of plastic balls on hand.
